For most groups, Ultimate Werewolf is the best Werewolf card set. It’s inexpensive, it handles almost any group size, and it includes a moderator app. For 3 to 10 players who want quick games with no moderator, One Night Ultimate Werewolf is the better buy. The Werewolves of Miller’s Hollow is the classic European box. Blood on the Clocktower is the premium choice for experienced groups who want dead players to keep playing.
Here’s how they compare, and who each one is wrong for.

Figures come from Bezier Games for One Night and from Wikipedia’s articles on Ultimate Werewolf, The Werewolves of Miller’s Hollow and Blood on the Clocktower.
Ultimate Werewolf: best for most groups #
Ted Alspach’s Ultimate Werewolf, published by Bezier Games since 2008, is the straightforward version of classic Werewolf in a box. Wikipedia lists it for 5 to 75 players, 15 to 45 minutes and ages 9 and up. A moderator runs the game, which Bezier describes as a Villagers-versus-Werewolves deduction game of alternating days and nights.
- Price: Bezier’s own store listed the base game at $14.95 in September 2026. Check current pricing.
- Expandable: compatible with Ultimate Werewolf Extreme, Bonus Roles and Pro. A separate campaign version, Ultimate Werewolf Legacy, came out in 2018.
- App support: Bezier’s Ultimate Werewolf Moderator app builds decks, scans cards and players, and walks the moderator through each phase. Scanning requires Ultimate Werewolf (4th edition) or Extreme.
Wrong for: groups of 3 or 4, or groups where nobody wants to moderate.
One Night Ultimate Werewolf: best for small groups #
One Night is a different design. There’s one night, one day and one vote, with no moderator and no elimination, for 3 to 10 players in about 10 minutes. A companion app for iOS and Android narrates the night, and roles like the Robber and Troublemaker swap cards, so you may end the game on a different team.
- Price: Bezier’s store listed it at $29.95 in September 2026. Check current pricing.
- Combinable: works with other One Night titles in the series, such as Daybreak, Vampire, Alien and Super Villains.
Wrong for: groups over 10, or players who enjoy the slow build of a multi-night game. The full comparison is in One Night Ultimate Werewolf vs Werewolf.
The Werewolves of Miller’s Hollow: the classic European box #
Designed by Philippe des Pallières and Hervé Marly and first published in 2001, Miller’s Hollow was nominated for the 2003 Spiel des Jahres, according to Wikipedia. It’s listed for 8 to 47 players, about 30 minutes and ages 10 and up, with a game master running the night. Its best-known twist is the Sheriff, elected by the village, whose vote counts as two.
- Expansions: New Moon (2006), The Village (2009), Characters (2012) and The Pact (2014).
- Publisher: originally Lui-même in France. French Wikipedia lists Asmodee as publisher since 2020.
Wrong for: groups under 8. We compare it directly with Bezier’s version in Werewolves of Miller’s Hollow vs Ultimate Werewolf.
Blood on the Clocktower: best for experienced groups #
Steven Medway’s Blood on the Clocktower, published by The Pandemonium Institute, was funded by a Kickstarter campaign that began in 2018 and reached players in 2022. Wikipedia says the campaign raised more than $570,000 against a $65,000 goal. It supports 5 to 20 players, and games run 30 to 120 minutes.
It fixes Werewolf’s biggest complaint: dead players aren’t out. They keep talking and get one vote for the rest of the game. The Storyteller runs the game from a “grimoire” and may give false information to players who are drunk or poisoned, so the town can never fully trust its clues. The publisher’s site describes three editions with over 300 role tokens.
- Price: a premium box, much more expensive than the others here. Check the publisher’s current pricing.
- Online play: Wikipedia notes an official web app for playing online.
Wrong for: new groups, casual parties and anyone who wants a 20-minute game. More in Blood on the Clocktower vs Werewolf.
How to choose #
- 3 to 6 players: One Night Ultimate Werewolf.
- 7 to 20 players, casual group: Ultimate Werewolf.
- You want the classic European version, 8 or more players: The Werewolves of Miller’s Hollow.
- Regular group, happy with long games and a skilled Storyteller: Blood on the Clocktower.
- You don’t want to buy anything: play with a regular deck of cards. See how to play Mafia with playing cards.
Playing without a box #
A card set gives you art and something to hold, but it isn’t required. Mafia Helper deals roles for 5 to 20 players by passing the phone, with a two-step reveal so each player sees only their own role. It has a Werewolf mode with Werewolves, the Seer, Witch, Hunter, Doctor, Bodyguard and Masons, and it runs the classic multi-night game. If you already own a box and prefer the cards, keep dealing them and enter who got what, and the app still tracks the night for the moderator. It doesn’t replicate One Night’s card swaps or Blood on the Clocktower’s Storyteller powers.
Frequently asked questions #
What is the best Werewolf card game? #
For most groups, Ultimate Werewolf: it’s affordable, scales from 5 players to very large groups, and has a moderator app. For small groups without a moderator, One Night Ultimate Werewolf is better. Experienced groups often move on to Blood on the Clocktower.
Which Werewolf game is best for a small group? #
One Night Ultimate Werewolf, which works with 3 to 10 players and needs no moderator. Classic Werewolf struggles below 6 players, because one wrong vote can end the game.
Is Blood on the Clocktower better than Werewolf? #
It’s deeper and longer, and it solves the problem of eliminated players sitting out. But it costs far more, needs a skilled Storyteller and can run past two hours. Many groups keep both: Werewolf for parties, Clocktower for dedicated game nights.
Do you need to buy a Werewolf set to play? #
No. Classic Werewolf works with paper slips, a deck of playing cards or a phone app. Boxed sets add artwork, extra roles and, in some cases, companion apps.
